Advice and Consulting Options*
We understand how difficult it can be to navigate one’s employer-sponsored retirement plan (401k, 403b, 457, TSP, etc.). Unfortunately, many of these plans are not user-friendly, and it may seem to many employees that there are few resources available to help them plan for their retirement. We help clients sort through the confusion. We can offer direct/discretionary investment management, indirect/non-discretionary investment management, beneficiary reviews, and we can explain plan information such as distribution options and investment options.
Discretionary Investment Management– this service includes direct management of a client’s retirement plan by PWM if allowed by the plan sponsor. Typically, we’re able to invest a client’s account in the mutual funds offered by the employer or in individual stocks through a self-directed brokerage window (if one is available).
Many pilots (such as those working for United, Southwest, Delta, or American Airlines), lawyers (Winston & Strawn, Crowell & Moring, or Ballard Spahr), and employees of other firms (such as the University of California system, Visa, Accenture, Booz Allen Hamilton, MedStar Health, Entergy, Pfizer, Microsoft, GMBC, BAE Systems, or CapitalOne) have the ability for the self-directed brokerage option. We can also offer discretionary investment management services for clients who have retirement plans through TIAA. Here’s more information about self-directed retirement plan investing.
Non-Discretionary Investment Management– if a client’s plan doesn’t allow for PWM to manage their account directly, we can offer recommendations that clients can use. Clients then implement any changes themselves.
Other consulting services- We help clients keep on top of their beneficiary designations, explain their plan documents, talk through the pros/cons of in-service distributions (if available), discuss their options after they leave their employer, and help them optimize their plan contributions. We also help clients decide how to allocate contributions across the pre-tax, Roth, or after-tax accounts within their retirement plan.
*Advice and consulting offerings vary based on the rules established by each plan sponsor.
